Many different decorations, but similar ingredient lists...Jul 20, 2011

I bought this book on clearance for $9.00, and flipped through it looking at all pretty pictures of decorative cupcakes. Once I got home, I was able to look at it a little more closely, and although there are good recipes or themes in there for yummy-looking cupcakes (haven't baked any yet), I noticed that many of the recipes call for boxed cake mixes that you dazzle up with decorations. Only a few have the ingredients for flour, butter, baking soda...which is a real disappointment because if I wanted boxed cake, I'd make boxed cake.
Some of the themes are nice, but some look like repeats of other decorations but instead of using X decoration, you're told to use Y decoration but the ingredients would practically be the same.
I'm sure it's a little challenging to come up with 150 different cupcake recipes, but the title is a little misleading. Yes, there are 150 themes (all the seasons, holidays, sports teams, etc.), but not really 150 unique cupcake recipes.
I'll definitely try the recipes (without the box cake mix), and feel better that I paid only $9.
